Shabnam Lone calls another Panelist as “Hindu Terrorist” for Defending Indian Army

An army officer who used a man as human shield+ in Jammu and Kashmir last month, said today that if he hadn’t done that “at least 12 or more lives” would have been lost, and that “had I fired there would have been many casualties.”

The officer, Major Leetul Gogoi , was criticised by many across the country for tying an alleged stone-pelter to the bonnet of a jeep to use him as shield against those pelting stones during a bypoll in J&K. Yesterday, he was awarded the ‘Army Chief Commendation Card for sustained efforts in counter-insurgency operations.’

Gogoi said that on April 9, he got a call to check the security situation at a polling station in Budgam. When he went there, he somehow managed to rescue polling staff and was trying to escort them away to safety, but it was proving very difficult in the face of over a 1,000 stone-pelters.
Gogoi described how what happened later was not premeditated .

“At that time suddenly in my mind, the idea to tie him to the jeep came. Seeing (that I did) this, the stone pelting stopped. Then I got a safe window to come out. These things I’ve done to save the local people. If I had not done it, 12 people would have died,” Gogoi recalled.
The Army major further described an extremely fraught situation outside the polling booth.

“1,200 people had surrounded the poll station and were trying to burn it with petrol bombs. People were pelting stones from all sides, even women and children, and even people from roof tops,” Major Gogoi recalled in a television interview.

The Army major said that the man he tied to the jeep, one Farooq Ahmad Dar, was initially standing about 30 metres from his vehicle.
“I saw a short person standing 30 meters from my vehicle (among the stone pelters. I immediately told my boys to catch a hold of him. he was instigating the crowd and might have been the ringleader. When he saw us he started running towards the crowd and got on his bike. Somehow we caught him,” he recalled.

By then, the 1,200-strong crowd became even more violent and started hurling petrol-bombs at his men, Gogoi said.
While Major Gogoi defended his actions, his comments didn’t cut much ice with opposition leader Omar Abdullah of the National Conference. He said there should have been a military inquiry into the Major’s actions.
