Stones pelted on murdered RSS activist’s funeral; Heightened communal tension

MANGALURU: Thousands of people came out to pay final tributes to RSS man Sharath Madivala, who died on Friday night. Several youngsters followed the funeral procession on their two-wheelers, which was taken out from the mortuary of AJ Hospital in Mangaluru to Sharath’s native place, on Saturday morning.

Pro-Hindu outfit leaders had asked the public to maintain peace during the procession. They had also told the public not to shout any provocative slogans during the procession. Following the instructions, only ‘Bolo Bharath Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Amar Rahe Sharath Kumar’ were raised throughout the procession.

The ambulance carrying the mortal remains of Sharath was in the front and motorcycles, cars and other vehicles followed the ambulance. The funeral procession went via KPT, Nanthoor, Bajal, Adyar, Farangipete, Thumbay and B C Road.

Things took an ugly turn once the ambulance reached Kaikamba in B C Road. A few miscreants pelted stones and threw bottles at the procession from Sulthan- a commercial complex in the vicinity. Soon after, stone pelting was reported from another building located near B C Road bus stand. A few youngsters in the procession also started to pelt stones at the commercial complex.

The police have arrested and booked seven persons for rioting, causing communal violence and damaging property. “Former Mayor of Mangaluru K Ashraf, Suhail Khadak, Ashraf Kinaar Kudroli, CM Muttappa, Mohammad Hanif, H Meed Kudroli and Naushad Bandaru were arrested,” the SP said.

Following the stone-pelting, shops and business across Bantwal shut down.
