More than 30 inmates of Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison were on Sunday shifted to different jails in the state following the commotion in the jail after DIG (Prisons) D Roopa’s visit on Saturday.

It is said that the authorities of Parappana Agrahara have written letters to the superintendents of prisons of different districts stating that some of the convicts were being shifted to jails there. However, there was no mention about why they were being shifted.

Reports from Belagavi said that three inmates from Bengaluru jail — Ananthmurthy, Babu and Babu alias ‘Long Babu’ — were shifted to Hindalga Jail for allegedly giving information about irregularities at Parappana Agrahara jail to Roopa.A police van dropped off three prisoners from Bengaluru at the Kalaburagi Central Jail on Sunday under heavy police cover.

According to official sources, three other prisoners were moved to the Central Jail in Ballari and three more were sent to Vijayapura Central Jail.

The sources said the prisoners who were shifted to Kalaburagi are Syed Kaisar, Vasant Urs and Krishna.

All three have been kept in high-security barracks.

On Saturday, tempers ran high at Parappana Agrahara central jail when one group of inmates, who were pouring out their woes to DIG Roopa, were threatened and shouted down by another group said to be loyal to Jail Superintendent Krishna Kumar. With matters getting out of hand, the police were called in. It is said that police resorted to mild lathi-charge on the inmates when they came out from the barracks and tried to stage a protest.

A few hours later, some of the inmates, including Ram Murthy, Srinivas, Shivashankar and others, were shifted to different jails in Belagavi, Mysuru, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura and Ballari. Some of the prisoners who were shifted were not able to walk properly when they got down from the escort vehicles, due to the assault. A few young prisoners were seen limping due to the injuries, sources said.
