Former Pakistan all-rounder Imran Khan was sworn in as the 22nd Prime Minister of the nation on Saturday. As he became the first ever cricketer turned Prime Minister, we have another huge Indian star cricketer who looks set to embark into a political journey.
Gautam Gambhir might be contesting next general elections from Delhi on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket if reports are to be believed. The out-of-favour Indian opener has been on BJP’s priority list as the party looks set to overturn its fortune in the capital. Currently, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is the ruling party in the state. Meanwhile, BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in power in centre.
As per a report in national daily, Dainik Jagaran, BJP is likely to convince Gambhir to contest in the upcoming general elections from Delhi. Someone like Gambhir fits the bill for BJP and brings in a huge fan base with him to the party. For the BJP, which hasn’t been in power in the state for a while now, it will be a perfect boost to have the local superstar in their ranks. If the move turns out to be a reality, it will see Gambhir join the likes of Mohammad Azharuddin and Navjot Singh Sindhu in joining politics after cricket.
